Hello Colonizer
I saw a post on the internet a few days ago. A white lady from Sunderland was unwrapping a large scoop of Fufu with excitement. In front of her, she had a bowl of egusi soup, proteins and a dark bottle of Guinness . Her eyes lit up with scoops of laughter on her cheeks. The video had Davido’s song mimed by a white voice over it. The voice sang the song word for word, enjoying every bit of the rhythm . My cheek puffed with pride. It was beautiful to watch as a Nigerian. After watching the video I moved to the comments, and I got the title of this letter. The comment read,
“It’s time to colonize you with our food. It’s the best in the world”
It’s your time to colonize the world.
While colonization connotes political control.
The new colonization is a cultural infection that happens without force. A taste and see effect on everyone who encounters you, your nature, your ambiance, your products, your mien, your intellect, your gift, your talents, your essence and everything you represent.
The individual has the power to influence quite overwhelmingly to the point that they infect those they encounter just because you speak that good, write so well, dance so beautifully, dress so colorfully and so on.
The new form of colonialism is forceless and experiential, it happens willingly without gunboats and shackles.
People are shifting, learning a new dance, language, fashion, following a new human on instagram or moving to new countries not for economic purposes but because this new thing speaks to them deeply. But that will not happen if you’re quick to dismiss yourself, your identity.
The new colonialism requires no street evangelism or campaign. It requires BEING and loving your characters genuinely and being proud of it.
Pride is an attraction. It’s a magnet. When you stay in your core and flourish. You will receive attention as a gift. But if you keep shifting in compromise, you will lose your base.
Compromise dilutes energy and destroys influence. It tampers with your power to infect and bring people over to your Mecca. You must understand that everyone has something to offer including you. Something original and deep like Afrobeats from Nigeria, Salsa from Cuba, Kimono from Japan, Kente from Ghana, Pizza from Italy etc. But when you leave home, there will be nothing to bring people to.
Home in this context is not a place. It could be, but it’s mostly your strength and one thing you have that others don’t. We can all have roots and still belong to others in a way that speaks to us.
I’ve colonized people and I’ve also been colonized. Some have bought me over with their positivity and exciting vibe, I visit their pages to have a dose of what they exude. When are large group buys into your dream, business and idea, that is colonization.
Some take care of their bodies in a way that makes me stunned. Some have perfected the act of communication in a way that makes me wonder. Some are just breathing encouragement. I’d pay to see some people laugh. Some have become the fabrics of the world in the way they lace their garments. Some have become a dome of wisdom. We’re in the age of interpersonal colonization and delightful influence and the best three questions to ask yourself are:
What do I have that can colonize the world?
What am I doing to nurture it?
How proud am I of it?
